What does it mean to die? \u00a0What does it mean to die in the digital age? \u00a0What is the relationship between death and data? \u00a0If the things we make and put online outlast us, can we really \u201cdie\u201d in the 21st century? \u00a0What kind of data did people in the past leave behind?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This class explores the idea of digital death, through critical approaches to the possibilities of true \u201cdigital death\u201d in the computer age and the production of digital archives that \u201cresurrect\u201d the stories of people who are long dead. \u00a0\u00a0By the end of the course, students will learn to create and curate online databases, to consider the preservation (and annihilation) of digital data, and understand the meaning of death in the digital age.<\/p>\n

LEARNING OUTCOMES:<\/b><\/p>\n

Upon completing DIG215, students will be able to:<\/p>\n

• Understand<\/i> the changing relationships between death and data preservation<\/li>\n
• Create\/preserve\/hack <\/i>data by building databases<\/i><\/li>\n
• Analyze<\/i> different methods for preserving lives online, and methods for deleting digital footprints<\/li>\n
• Experiment<\/i> with the production of digital archives<\/li>\n
• Explore<\/i> the meaning of death in the internet age<\/li>\n
• Evaluate<\/i> competing claims about the ethical collection and use of social data<\/li>\n
• Gain<\/i> an introductory technical knowledge of many digital tools or methods that can be useful to scholars (such as dynamic mapping, social network analysis, topic modeling, and HTML publishing) and an in-depth knowledge of one or two.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
