{"id":340,"date":"2014-09-26T01:13:23","date_gmt":"2014-09-26T05:13:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.davidson.edu\/dig360\/?p=340"},"modified":"2014-09-26T01:13:23","modified_gmt":"2014-09-26T05:13:23","slug":"spotting-the-difference-with-maptiler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/courses.shroutdocs.org\/dig360-fall2014\/2014\/09\/26\/spotting-the-difference-with-maptiler\/","title":{"rendered":"Spotting the Difference with MapTiler"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While projects in the digital humanities range from thick mapping data onto Maps, such as <em>Hyper Cities<\/em>, to\u00a0reinterpreting social interactions through mobile devices, such as location-based social networks described by Adriana de Souza Silva and Jordan Frith in\u00a0<em>Mobile Stories,\u00a0<\/em>all employ a unique digital medium that is tailored to best convey the message.\u00a0One of the many niches that the digital humanities has carved for itself is representing historical documents through a digital medium specifically by placing historical information on maps. For example, in this <a href=\"https:\/\/0123d643b3d15964d39a62146b962af3093d4d0b.googledrive.com\/host\/0B3irKBmIg4jUUDUtQVJjSWRXR2M\/\">link<\/a>, a physical map of Davidson College&#8217;s campus from 1978 has been layered on top of Google Maps using MapTiler.<\/p>\n<p>By placing this piece of Davidson history in the context of an immediately understandable satellite image, the viewer is fluidly transported\u00a0from 2014 to 1978 and vice versa.
