  Historical skills \u2013 by the end of the course you should be able to:<\/em><\/p>\n

  • Link events and themes from the past with current events.<\/li>\n
  • Clearly express ideas and arguments through writing and speech.<\/li>\n
  • Read, digest and analyze scholarly work on American disaster history.<\/li>\n
  • Locate, select and use primary and secondary sources<\/li>\n
  • Use and critique others\u2019 use of primary sources in making historical arguments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Command of information \u2013 by the end of the course you should have:<\/em><\/p>\n

    • Knowledge of the context for the disasters we discuss in class. This includes major political, social and economic events, movements and turning points during America\u2019s \u201cGilded Age\u201d<\/li>\n
    • Familiarity with the most expensive, deadly and destructive disasters in American history.<\/li>\n
