Thinking Atlantically

Beginning in the fifteenth century, and continuing to [TBD?] people around the Atlantic basin looked oceanward, considering the possibilities of trans-Atlantic exploration, migration, settlement, warfare and economies. This course surveys the development of Atlantic history as a discipline alongside historical ideas about Atlantic ocean space. Topics include both indigenous and European Ages of exploration, the (often violent) expropriation of native peoples in the Americas and Africa, ideologies of contact and colonization, and the movement of people, goods, capital and ideas in and around the Atlantic ocean basin.
