  COURSE OBJECTIVES:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  Command of information \u2013 by the end of the semester you should know:<\/em><\/p>\n

  • Major political, social and economic themes that have shaped the \u201cAtlantic World\u201d between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries.<\/li>\n
  • Histories of polities around the Atlantic basin, including those in Europe, the Americas and Africa<\/li>\n
  • Major debates surrounding Atlantic history.<\/li>\n
  • Genealogy of Atlantic history<\/li>\n
  • Extant arguments about why Atlantic history favors some historical narratives over others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Historical skills \u2013 by the end of the semester you should be able to:<\/em><\/p>\n

    • Construct an argument about the temporal limits of \u201cthe Atlantic World\u201d<\/li>\n
    • Clearly express ideas and arguments through writing and speech.<\/li>\n
    • Read, digest and analyze scholarly work on history.<\/li>\n
    • Use and critique the use of primary sources in making historical arguments.<\/li>\n
    • Apply the skills learned in history classrooms to their extra-academic lives.<\/li>\n
