How do traditional stories of contact and colonization change?<\/li>\n<li>When and why might historians adopt an Atlantic framework?<\/li>\n<li>How has Atlantic history shaped the historical narratives being produced today?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>COURSE OBJECTIVES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Command of information \u2013 by the end of the semester you should know:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Major political, social and economic themes that have shaped the \u201cAtlantic World\u201d between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries.<\/li>\n<li>Histories of polities around the Atlantic basin, including those in Europe, the Americas and Africa<\/li>\n<li>Major debates surrounding Atlantic history.<\/li>\n<li>Genealogy of Atlantic history<\/li>\n<li>Extant arguments about why Atlantic history favors some historical narratives over others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Historical skills \u2013 by the end of the semester you should be able to:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Construct an argument about the temporal limits of \u201cthe Atlantic World\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Clearly express ideas and arguments through writing and speech.<\/li>\n<li>Read, digest and analyze scholarly work on history.<\/li>\n<li>Use and critique the use of primary sources in making historical arguments.<\/li>\n<li>Apply the skills learned in history classrooms to their extra-academic lives.<\/li>\n<li>Identify and apply Chicago Manual of Style citation standards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ORGANIZING QUESTIONS: What is \u201cthe Atlantic world\u201d?
