We read, we convened, we came up with a list of things that matter:
-Grand theory in real world contexts
-Presenting information/knowledge that is applicable to individuals’ lives
-Short, concise, deliverables that tackle concrete questions
-Contracts – ensures everyone does work and reading and contributes
-Questioning the efficacy of face-to-face communication
-How do we use technology to stay “human”
-Classes in different settings
-But we are bodies
-Collaborative, adaptive leadership
-Co-creation of class frameworks and goals
-Big picture – putting energy towards group projects
-Students shaping the course
-Accountability to stay engaged
-Do contracts make this work?
-Does physical interaction matter
-Working towards a common goal
For me, there are some big takeaways here:
- There is an interest in some kind of concrete, real-world project.
- There is an interest in emphasizing classroom engagement – which will lead me to ask of you all: what is going to help you be most engaged in the classroom? Do you want pre-circulated discussion questions? Some free-writing time at the start of each class? Something else?
- There is an interest in concrete goals/outcomes/expectations. This will be most important for coming up with the rules and format for blog posts and assignments.
- There is an interest in student participation in shaping the course.
