A definition of memorials, adapted from James M. Mayo, “War Memorials as Political Memory,” Geographical Review 78, no. 1 (January 1, 1988): 62–75:

Memorials represent the strengths and weaknesses of wars and the societies that make them.  They create conversations around symbolic and socio-political landscapes on both local and global levels.  They are the social, physical and/or digital arrangements of space and artifacts.  They impose meaning and order on chaotic experiences of life.

Some memorials we used to build this definition:

Soviet Soldier, Berlin:

9/11 Memorial, Montclair High School

9/11 Memorial, Eagle Rock

Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, Berlin

Memorial in light, New York City
