Data can be one of the most useful and critical attributes to our society yet can only be helpful and supportive if it is understood  and applied correctly. Prior to reading this article I did not really think about the importance of once Data is collected and obtain what is the “next” step in order of this data to be valid or even valuable. The Acronym “Fair” revolving about data is very useful because it simply states the characteristics Data should reflect. If data is not findable, accessible, interoperable, and Reusable then it should be noted that this data should not be used because it most likely won’t help support what point one is trying to validate. My colleague who wrote The “R” in FAIR made a remark that I also agree with the concept of “Reusable” data. What makes data so necessary is that it can be used in various situations and support different types of viewpoints. This blog also points out that data can used over and over again and never goes away which is important to remember when dealing with data.

The emergence of the digital age has most definitely created a division in what people think about scholarship. For example, as a young adult who has been brought up where technology has been heavily be apart of my education. I find online data, statistics, graphs, and articles that have published online to be very useful and much needed for me to grew as a student and to understand topics. However an argument  that someone who has not had the same experience as me could say that the digital age does not respect articles and publishers online because it is “nonprofessional”  I don’t agree with this because in order as a society to continue to grow and develop, we have to continue to be progressive. I agree with the post of “What is scholarship” because it reiterates the point that the new digital is apart of what is making scholarship to evolve.

Why Feminist Thought should be priority:

Feminist digital humanities is not only extremely crucial to giving a voice to women in this field but it also allows people the opportunity to question. Under the umbrella of feminist theory and its relationship with digital humanities delves into the importance of nature and culture as well as other binaries. Reason and emotion are two binaries that would never have been included in the discipline of Digital Humanities without Feminist theory. Visualization in DH is vital for people to question or develop different perspectives about the way in which society treats people based on the way society groups people and influence others. The blog “Feminist Data Visualization” emphasizes my points about rethinking binaries and how critical it is to our world.

The pitfalls of History

Without the discipline of history, stories, events, and personal narratives would never be exposed to different parts of the world and different groups of people. History and the retelling of what happened in the past is the only way to help build a better future. However, the problem with history is that people need to understand that everything that is written down comes from a perspective. In order to become more knowledgable about different subjects people need to question what is written and the audience they are talking to. For example, from a Patriotic/American revolution perspective Thomas Jefferson is highly regarded as not only a founding father to the declaration but also improved out international relations with France. Although Jefferson is very crucial to the success of the foundation of America that does not mean his behavior and hiring hundreds of slaves on his property should go unnoticed. Even “heroes” faults and poor decision making should be exploited in order for people to learn the truth and make perspectives on their own. In the blog “making silence visible” blog relates to my point about learning the truth about history and how “absent” information is the worst thing for peoples perspective to be skewed.

Why Topic Modeling is important

The discipline of women’s studies and the analysis of gender in regard to women has only become expansive since 1985. Even though the this scholarship is finally joining history and enables people to have the resources and opportunity to learn about the history of women and their struggle, topic modeling educates people that their is a lot more progress surrounding women’s studies to happen. From a a Quantitative analysis, it is quite obvious that the study of womanhood is centrally focused on “gender”, “women”, or a “group of woman” hence that these words are mentioned at least every 1500 words and majority of articles in this fieldwork are highly concentrated around these words. It is very crucial for data analysis and topic modeling to be apart of researching women’s studies because it gives statistical data that portrays the frequency of words that is used to describe this field study. Without these numbers, society would just think it would be ok with the progress that has been made and just check the box rather then seeking for improvement. In a blog written by a peer of mine states perfectly on this subject. The blog expresses that since topical modeling can decipher frequency of words, this skill exploits the inequality between gender and the discourse of womens studies.

One of the main reasons why people struggle to be happy or find happiness is not the “tragedies” that happen in their lives but rather the social stigmas that are attached to what goes on in people’s in lives. No matter what gender, people are going to be disappointed with themselves if they get let go or become unemployed. The data that suggests men become more depressed and anxious when they are unemployed contributes to more of the social construction that men are suppose to provide and be the main source of income for their family. Although gender norms have broken some barriers, society still needs to do a better job in perceiving both genders as equal. The post,
“Unemployment and Psychological Well-being” brought up a very valid point about how in depth this survey was. In my opinion, I think that it is hard for this data and study to be conducted because everyone has different struggles.

Parallels between Dublin and Lewiston

Pressure is one of worst emotions to exist because it can only create stress  levels to increase and people not being able to properly function. Without the ability to feel free and liberated, productivity and living a healthy life is not attainable. Guinnane and O Grada piece on Mortality in the North Dublin Union talked about the conditions of the workhouses in Dublin.  In the article it explicitly talks about how these working conditions explicitly affect productivity and mortality rates. While reading this article is became very apparent to me how similar this event in history was to Lewiston around the same time period. I found the post, “Guinnane and O Grada…The Power of Data in history”  to be very informational because it really honed in on the power of data  and  why people should study and research these sets. Data also is very critical to these types of situations because it may offer some solutions to enhance performance and answers the question “why?” to a lot of problems that are way beyond the surface.

Everyone knows the term the strong will survive. However how accurate do those words  truly mean when put into the context and backed up behind data. When looking at the scenario of comparing different groups  nutrition from different backgrounds and how it affects morality rates,  fertility rates,  level of income, and productivity data is the most profound tool that enables people to comprehend how having the correct diet and nutrients inhibits a better environment for people and can be seen from a macro and micro analysis. For example, from an individual perspective people who had a well balanced diet and got a decent amount of sleep correlated to living longer and were more productive. From a macro level analysis this study and data sets has enabled to look at this from more a cultural standpoint and acknowledge how nutrition effects economic cycles and entry of females into the work place. I found this article to be very relevant to our class discussions because it connected to how data allows society to have a conversation and recognize about cultural norms how they should be changed in order to better the overall quality of people’s lives.
